A Community's Triumph

EducationGlobal Beat

Coming from such a small town, our community is like one big family. When someone struggles, someone is always there to have that person's back. When someone triumphs, we all triumph. Our community has always been a major part of our educational success. It seems that our community realizes that by investing time, they are investing in our future. They understand that when we feel supported, we are more likely to put forth effort. This impacts not only sports but our academic classes as well.

An example of that community support was shown last year on January 18, 2018; the Robertson County Black Devils basketball team went in with very little odds of winning the Class-A championship. Even though the odds of winning were slim, our community (which included business owners, parents, alumni, teachers, and others) all showed up to support us. Our community brought homemade signs to the game and cheered us on until they lost their voices. The first half was not the best; the opposing team led by seven the majority of the time. However, this was not nearly as bad as people had anticipated. We ended up playing one of the most astonishing second halves; we inbounded the ball and had a lane to the basket. The Paris Greyhounds closed the gap, leaving Brandon Dice wide open in the corner for the game-winning shot. The entire crowd stormed the court, for we had just won the first ever Class-A championship for Robertson County. After all the nets were cut and photos were taken, we were welcomed back into our town with applause.

In all, the goal of our community seems to be to support us students with their time and energy, no matter if it be for our academic or athletic efforts. When we, as students, realize the amount of time that is given to us, we then return that favor by being a valuable member of society and giving back to this great community of Mt. Olivet.

Joshua Pilosky is a 10th-grade student at Robertson County School in Kentucky. He is very active in Varsity Basketball and Varsity Baseball. He and another student have recently started their own entrepreneurship here in the community of Mt. Olivet and have been very successful thus far. Joshua spends his spare time with his family and playing sports with his friends.
