A Pivotal Journey
“Existential crisis” would be defined as “inner conflicts characterized by the impression that life lacks meaning” in a dictionary and I would argue that it is a debilitating experience one undergoes at least once in their life. At the sweet age of 16, my first-ever existential crisis arrived at my doorstep as I lay on my bed on numerous nights wondering about the meaning of life and why I exist. Thus began a pivotal journey in my life where I was cautious about my surroundings, trying to find the meaning and purpose of my life.
As a result of this existential crisis, I was able to realize how my family has played such a central role in shaping my sense of purpose and meaning in this life. Family bonds are highly cherished in the Pakistani community, often considered the cornerstone of one’s existence, providing emotional support, guidance, and a sense of belonging. When facing challenges in life, I was thankful to be blessed with a loving family that supported me through thick and thin. Family, with its nurturing environment, guidance, and unwavering support, significantly contributes to an individual’s search for meaning in life. From fostering emotional connections to imparting values and beliefs, family is what I believe guides us toward a fulfilling and meaningful existence.
Looking back at it, contributing to the welfare of others in the community and actively engaging in social causes often provided a profound sense of fulfillment and meaning, whether it was participating in community service activities or helping people in the time of an economic crisis such as the one we are facing today. Thus, given the helpful nature of our people and the fact that Pakistani culture values contributing to the community through philanthropic efforts and volunteer work, helping others in times of need provides a sense of gratification and a sense of belonging in a community and gives purpose to life.
Religion, Islam in particular, holds immense significance in my life as well as in that of the people of Pakistan. It provides a framework for understanding life’s purpose, emphasizing virtues such as compassion, charity, and communal harmony. For me, religion fosters a sense of unity and purpose as the rituals, prayers, and events like Eid bring families and the entire Muslim community together. Additionally, the belief in an afterlife and accountability for an individual’s actions in this world is what I believe gives meaning and purpose to my life — to be a better human being in this world to reap the rewards in the afterworld.
