An Extension of the Hand?

Why should AI creations of paintings, works, and poetry, despite their superb skills, not be considered true art?

The AI industry naturally avoids direct contact with people. In the rapid development of technology, AI has delved deeper into the field of artistic creation, creating a large number of paintings, works, and poetry with exquisite technology. This kind of development even has a trend toward becoming a completely new genre. AI, as a human creation, an advanced tool, and an extension of the hand, can replace humans to complete many complex and difficult works, and even surpass and defeat humans in certain aspects. The Saudi government even granted citizenship to the robot Sophia. Nevertheless, it is difficult for us to imagine that AI and robots are the same as we are. But we need to ask, “Is AI truly a being with emotions, aesthetics, and self-perspective?

Firstly, what is art? Art uses various means or media to shape images, create atmosphere, reflect reality, and send emotions. Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” has different meanings for both the world and himself. Each chapter and every note represent his experience or mood. There are ups and downs in the middle of the song, as if he is speaking. So, it can be seen that a work is created through the process of human rationality and sensibility. And the same goes for art. Art also requires its own thinking process and emotional injection to present a complete work, which is indispensable. If a work is called art, it must have aesthetic appeal. And this aesthetic is a personal perception of things or the natural world. AI is not human and cannot understand human emotions, so its production process can never become a creative process. Meanwhile, different works are determined by the artist's personality and the uniqueness of their thoughts and emotions. Therefore, the uniqueness of the artist's thoughts and emotions determines the inevitability of artistic innovation.

Nowadays, not only artists but also poets, writers, composers, and others are often lazy and leave everything to AI to complete. But this work completed by AI was not completed by the author themselves. If AI were exactly like humans, it could express its emotions through creating paintings, poetry collections, songs, and other works, and there would be no such thing as humans in this world.
