Fear and Anxiety Lead to Progress and Stability

Fear and AnxietyGlobal Beat

An American psychologist has put forth the view that when our human ancestors walked out of the African jungle, they were not hunters with spears and darts, but prey with fear. After a long battle with wild animals such as jackals, wolves, tigers, and leopards, human beings finally gained the upper hand and became the dominant force of the earth.

There are many examples of such fears and anxieties that make people progress in Chinese history. For more than a hundred years, generations of Chinese people have experienced countless reforms and technical development, unremitting in the fear and anxiety of racial destruction, and then made progress. In the Sino-Japanese War and the oppression of the invasion of China by the eight-nation coalition forces, the Chinese awakened; in countless unequal treaties, the Chinese awakened.

Law makes the country and society more stable. If there is no law, people will do whatever they want and hurt the interests of others for their own sake. And the key of law is fear. At a smaller level, many people who do not want to obey traffic rules do not run red lights because they fear cameras and fines; thus the law maintains traffic order. At a larger level, people with hatred or resentment do not commit crimes because they fear prisons; thus the law protects countless lives. Society needs fear to maintain stability. If people no longer fear punishment and courts, then the law loses its meaning. People abide by the law, first of all, because they are afraid of the law, which contributes to the authority of the law and makes society develop stably.

Anxiety also improves our efficiency. Examinations are a good example. Students are anxious before exams because they are not confident about their knowledge, which forces them to review and prepare more. As a result, they review more efficiently and get better grades. Anxiety is our brain's warning to us. It urges us to study and work, and reminds us of our shortcomings and slackness. We have to work hard because of anxiety, and we have to work hard because of pressure, which makes us a harder and more efficient person.

Generally speaking, anxiety and fear are very important for our progress and social stability. We should not blindly exclude them, but make better use of them.
