My Community’s Opinions on AI

My community is probably different from the one that you're thinking about as I go to a very nice private school where there are a lot of kind people and teachers. At school there are a lot of strong opinions that are interesting and fun to think about, but there is one that I think is most eye-catching and that is everyone's opinion on AI. I think AI is cool and, used responsibly, could give a step up in learning while also being a tool to make friends and get closer to the people around you. But that is only if it is used responsibly, because if it is used irresponsibly then the learning community around you will fall apart.

I asked my closest friends how AI affects the community and they gave a very good response. They said that if AI is used in everyday life, overall intelligence will go down and we will be centrally reliant on AI. When that happens, it is game over and it will never end well. We would not know how to fend for ourselves and would die (some of my friends are kind of dark).

Then, I asked my teachers their opinions on AI. They said that if they could, they would turn off all the devices and do everything on paper because if they let AI do everything they wouldn't truly enjoy life and would not feel fulfilled with their life choices. When I thought about it, this made sense and really convinced me why we still do some work on paper and not all of it on computers.

With all of this information, I can’t decide; there’s so many different ways that AI could develop and the way people think about this subject can be so interesting. I had a really fun time running around and asking people what they thought. This really spoke to me and gave me new perspectives on AI and machines in general. I wanted to find out what the majority opinion was, but I realized that some of the answers were very weird. They weren’t based on fact and people were just talking about stuff they heard online, and that really disappointed me as I realize that the misinformation going around can sometimes hurt the people around us and could make it harder to find the truth.
