Past, Present, And Future Novelties

Throughout the years our society has been metamorphosing into a dependent being which relies way too much on artificial intelligence. Why are we diminishing our own capabilities, knowledge, and skills just so we can save some time? Does this suggest that we are not able to carry out some activities anymore and now we can only rely on AI? Moreover, is there anything AI can do for us that we are just turning a blind eye to? Are there any problems these not-so-new technological resources can not solve for us?

To start with, ever since the science fiction genre emerged, there have been countless occasions in which some authors have warned us about the dangers of AI development and how we might blindly apply it to the wrong situations, causing a disaster. I wonder how much influence these authors would have nowadays — if they were still alive, of course — knowing that such ideas could spread effortlessly thanks to social media and television. Not only books, but films such as Terminator and The Matrix have shown us a destructive perspective of AI that should be taken into consideration, too.

This is directly connected to the amount of information we, as a society, are letting AI have. As I have mentioned before, there have been people who have given us a preview of everything AI-related through their advice and realistic point of views. However, as AI benefits others, what they have said has been utterly rejected. AI is a fast learner, no matter the perspective. It learns faster than we do, and that’s one of the main reasons why it seems to me that it is about to become one of the most dangerous weapons that we have created in our existence.

Furthermore, laziness and ignorance have taken over younger generations, not knowing what is going on in the real world, always and forever focused on screens. It is strange to think that there are people out in the world who feel like they are just taking advantage of the types of AI which, for example, do homework for you. Honestly, it enrages me the way we are being used and how we let such tools control us and our lives. Why would we let them condition us to their standards and not ours?

In addition, this subconsciously affects our daily lives. The use of AI is currently being introduced to education as a learning method which, in my opinion, has proven itself as corrupting as it is useful. In this case we should analyze if the advantages are worth the disadvantages. This is because the more we leave AI to do for us, the more we will forget about all the things that, ever since our existence, have made us who we are and have placed us where we are: the peak of world domination.

Although people nowadays seem to care less and less about their personal information, I believe that nobody would want to have their information taken away by anybody. Why do people allow these new technologies to crack through their personal gates and collect data as if it were apples? If we are so paranoid and superstitious about our neighbors trying to get a sneak peek of our houses, then it makes no sense that we let the unknown break into them.

Nevertheless, not everything about AI is negative. It has contributed to many scientific discoveries thanks to its ability to quickly research fields such as meteorology and healthcare. If this were the only way we applied AI, I would be completely fine with this system we have created.

Another aspect of AI we should consider is how it could contribute to the end of hunger in certain parts of the world. And maybe not just hunger, but also the environmental problems the earth is facing because of our inability to take care of what we have. It has been proven that all of this and even more can be achieved through the intervention of AI. Do not get me wrong. AI is not some kind of God; it cannot fulfill miracles. Despite that, I believe that there are many points of view that have not been considered because we just have not come up with all the possible solutions. AI can certainly help to look for answers.

After all the aforementioned information, my view consists of keeping AI within the system, but with a little change. As I see it, AI must follow predetermined laws, just like Isaac Asimov endlessly mentioned in his books, so that its current fast development does not affect us in a negative way in the upcoming years. Naturally, I also feel that we should apply it to the previously mentioned problems in order to find innovative solutions and, consequently, make the world a better place.
