Uniting Holidays and Traditions

Connection and IsolationGlobal Beat

Everyone in the world is absolutely individual. As a result, sometimes it is very difficult for people to make friends for life. That’s why humans created holidays and rituals which are different for every country. They often bring the community together and help people become more united.

I live in an amazing country - Ukraine. It is full of numerous traditions and interesting people. We have our awesome traditional food. For example, Ukrainians adore borsch. Every woman in our country knows how to cook it. And every hostess makes it differently. Our people often eat borsch with bread, lard, and garlic.

We also have many traditional festivals. For example, we celebrate Easter every year. On this holiday, it is customary to say to people "Christ is risen" and in response to receive "Truly is risen." We enjoy baking and decorating special buttery bread called pasques. Most Ukrainians bless them in church and eat them with the whole family. In addition, we celebrate the holiday of Ivan Kupala. This festival is filled with various customs and rituals. For instance, the bravest ones jump over the fire. Unmarried girls weave wreaths and let them float on the water (into a lake or river). People believe that which bank the wreath flows shows in which direction the girl will get married. Another really entertaining and tasty holiday is Maslenitsa. Yes, it is absolutely delicious, because this is the day when Ukrainians fry pancakes with different fillings. On this day our people ask their relatives and friends for forgiveness for everything that they did wrong in relation to them. There is also a day in Ukraine that is celebrated by everyone who lives here. It's called Lavish Evening. The main attributes of the New Year's Eve among Ukrainians at the beginning of the 20th century were: a rich festive table, fortune-telling, dressing up, games, and fun. These traditions have survived to this day. Children still visit people, sing Christmas carols, and generously wish them all the blessings from God. It is believed that they bring happiness and prosperity to the owners of the house, and in return they receive various incentives in the form of sweets and money.

There are about 197 countries in the world and each has its own way of entertainment and reunification of people and I am very glad that I live in one of them. Ukraine is a country of diversity, tradition, and charm, and I highly recommend everybody visit my dear motherland and join us in celebrating our fun and exciting holidays.
