A Stupid Question
Artwork by Sara Howrani
What is the meaning of life?
What a stupid question. I practically scoff at this subjectivity.
I’m sure there are those who refute this.
Maybe it’s to die, maybe it’s to
Fill the void our heart ever so yearns for
Humans feel as if they are
Destined,
To answer the inexplicable complexities of life
They say sadness comes from knowledge of things;
The more you understand, the more you wish you didn’t understand them.
I’m here to tell you, you are wasting your time
This isn’t some physics equation with a constant number
No, it isn’t.
Instead, dwell on life’s greatest mysteries!
Drown yourself in love's embrace
Till you are suffocated
Till your heart shatters over and over again and still beats
Till it has torn you and rebuilt you
And when you are sad, don’t be brutal with your pain
For pain is a privilege. Don’t cast it away, nurse it
We rip out so much of ourselves answering the whys and the hows
That we forget it is much better to live,
to exist,
to breathe in what we cannot grasp
And if you are in doubt, know that
It will be bright and solstice again
Life has no bounds, you are infinite!
Let the excitement rattle in your lungs,
Let your stomach implode you with vibrational laughter,
Let your hand shiver in confrontation with the daunting uncertainties of life.
Hold on because you have many reasons to.
Reasons I, unfortunately, cannot list out,
But it is much better that way,
for we do not need a reason to live.
So, don’t bother answering that question;
To define is to limit.
The sun will rise again and again,
And there is no ifs, woulds, coulds, shoulds
it just is, and we just are.
