KidSpirit writers and artists bravely take on questions that go to the heart of the human experience. What is the meaning of life? Do we each have a purpose? How can we self-reflect in a time of overstimulation? Join them in discussing what is truly important to you and your peers.

1. This issue, the editors ask, “Is there universal meaning, or is meaning subjective and individual?” In her response to this Big Question, Sybille Nkunzimana considers major changes in her life and how her outlook has shifted in various circumstances. “Our entire existence is determined by how we react to the cards we are dealt,” she writes. Think of either a challenging event in your life or in that of a favorite book or movie character. What gave you or the character a sense of purpose before the event? What was important to you/them? Did this change? If so, how? Why do you think challenges can give us a different perspective?

2. In her Awesome Moments piece “A Cafe in Florence,” Eleanor Colston describes an uneventful afternoon that led to a profound realization. Envision a time in your life when you realized something important about what matters to you. Sketch a drawing of the moment or write a short poem about it. Where were you and what were you doing? What could you see, smell, taste, or feel? Share your work with the group and describe your memory and what you realized.

3. Kaitlin Curtice contributes this issue’s PerSpectives article. Kaitlin, an award-winning author, poet-storyteller, and public speaker, encourages us to embrace the different pieces of our identities and different stages of our lives. “Every single second, you are learning, you are creating a beautiful life, and you are making meaning with that life.” Draw a timeline of your life so far. It could be a straight line, or a wavy line with ups and downs, or even a circle. Choose at least four moments that stand out as important and put them on the timeline. How are the “seasons” of your life, the periods between these moments, different? How has each season contributed to your growth? If you feel comfortable, share your timeline with your neighbor.
