Storytelling and Narrative Group Guide
Volume X, Number IV
In a breakout issue of KidSpirit, contributors venture into the land of stories both true and of the imagination. Journey with them through fiction, drama, poetry, and personal reflection to explore how the tales we tell shape our inner and outer worlds. What do stories reveal about our societies and ourselves? Can they change the future? Consider these questions and more as you delve into this issue.
1. The editors go to the heart of the theme when they pose the Big Question “Why Are Humans Drawn to Stories?” In his response, Abraham Weitzman shares entertaining and enlightening tales passed down by his grandfather. Consider a story that has impacted your life. Why is it important to you? What did it teach you? Did it connect you to your family, heritage, or culture? How so?
2. In the Features section, kids around the world contribute to a series of linked tales called “Story to Story.” The last line of each fictional entry leads into the next, forming an ongoing narrative chain. Can you find three similarities between the stories? You may notice that they follow a similar pattern, or contain similar characters. Now, do you notice three differences? List your similarities and differences, then discuss them with your neighbor. What do your observations tell us about storytelling across cultures?
3. Jaden Flach shares a frightening experience many city dwellers can relate to: getting on the wrong bus. But this simple mistake leads to an extraordinary realization about how stories misled her into making assumptions about people she hadn’t met. Have you ever thought something to be true based on what you read or saw in books, newspapers, television, or social media, only to find out differently? Write a short story about your experience, then share it with the group!
4. Our PerSpectives contributor, award-winning author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, shares a powerful tale about wisdom. How is knowledge passed down in Macaria’s world, and what effect does it have on his community? Does this differ from yours? How have you learned your most important lessons and values?
