Violence and Healing Group Guide
Volume XV, Number III
In this powerful issue of KidSpirit, young writers and artists probe the roots of violence and ask how we can move forward after loss and destruction. Are humans inherently violent? How can we resolve our trauma? Does healing mean to forgive or to forget? Their work opens the door to a difficult but crucial conversation.
1. In the Big Question department, the editors ask: “Can traumatic experiences lead to inner development?” Marium Ihsan remembers a dark period in her life and shares how she emerged stronger and more resilient. Can you think of a difficult or painful event that changed you or taught you something important? Try to come up with three words that describe the lessons you learned or ways you grew. If you are comfortable, share the experience and your words with your neighbor.
2. Mahrukh Khurshid explores the nature of forgiveness in her Feature, “Why Do We Forgive?” While often seen as a universal ideal, she argues that “easy forgiveness, unlike true forgiveness, trivializes significant issues in a relationship.” Have you ever said you forgave someone, even if you did not really mean it? Have you ever apologized without really meaning it? Why? After reading Mahrukh’s article, what do you think you could have done differently? What could you have said instead?
3. In “A Traumatic Ember,” Konrad Tittel reviews the movie Till. He describes how a grieving mother coped with a tragic event. What books or movies have taught you how people have responded to violence or trauma? How have characters responded in healthy or constructive ways? In unhealthy ways? Do you think these books or movies have influenced how you approach conflict and healing?
4. This issue’s PerSpectives column comes from two advocates with first-hand experiences with violence, Pardeep Kaleka and Nicole Hockley, who answer questions from KidSpirit youth around the world. What are your questions about violence and healing? Share them with the group, and allow a few moments of discussion if anyone has insight they would like to share.
